Year 3 and the BBC Philharmonic

The children in Year 3 have enjoyed their first trip out to The Grand Palais, Swinton to watch the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

First of all, we sat on the ‘preeky’ and enjoyed our packed lunch before finding our seats and listening to the orchestra.  Each section was introduced and instruments were explained and demonstrated.  The children clapped and sang and composed and bopped along to some classical bangers from Austria, Spain, Norway and England.

Here is what the children thought:

‘My favourite section of the orchestra was the percussion, especially the fairy chimes’.

‘I loved being the conductor with my baton.’

‘I liked the violins because they can make high- and low- pitched sounds.’

‘The music from Spain was excellent.  I like the toreador tune.’

‘I sung to Golden from K-Pop Demon Hunters.’

‘I recognised the music to the video game Plants vs Zombies.’

‘I saw my friend from another school and went to say hello.’

‘A musician played Harry Potter on the French Horn.’

This has been a great start to our Year 3 music curriculum.  This term we will be singing in a round to songs such as Frere Jacques, which supported our Modern Foreign Languages, and London’s Burning.  The children learn how to hold a melody (tune) in unison (together).

On another note, the children were an absolute pleasure to take out of school.  Their excellent manners and behaviour were clear to see.  They were a credit to us all.
