French at Wardley
As of September 2014 it has been compulsory for schools to teach a modern foreign language. At Wardley CE Primary we are teaching French from Year 1 to Year 6.
Class teachers teach their own classes to create an environment of shared learning and support. Through our teaching of French as a modern foreign language we aim to develop the following essential characteristics:
• The confidence to speak with good intonation and pronunciation.
• Fluency in reading.
• Fluency and imagination in writing.
• A strong awareness of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
• A passion for languages and a commitment to the subject.
• The ability to use language creatively and spontaneously.
• An independence in their studies and the ability to draw upon a wide range of resources.
How French is taught across Key Stages?

Any language learning should be engaging, active and very involved. This looks different across the key stages at Wardley.
Within each academic year, children will study a series of Frenchtopics using the CGP salute program.
In Key Stage 1 French is taught weekly in a very active lesson. This lesson usually comprises songs and games which teach the children new vocabulary and give them the opportunity to speak in French as often as possible. French is also ‘drip fed’ throughout the day, for example by taking the register in French, counting in French as a maths warm up and greeting each other in the corridor. In Key Stage 1 the emphasis is mainly on learning some core vocabulary and simple conversation phrases, but really for creating a curiosity about different languages and cultures.
In Key Stage 2 language learning is no less active and fun, but there is greater depth and detail about the French language and French culture. French is taught in a weekly lesson. This lesson comprise singing and games as in Key Stage 1, but also a higher rate of new vocabulary and phrases, as well as the introduction of familiar French words and phrases to read and write. French will be linked to other lessons such as Geography and History, to provide a richer, different perspective.
Across the whole school, there are four key modern foreign language learning objectives that the children will keep returning to in their geography work. The children are assessed by the teacher during each unit against the age related expectations for these key learning objectives. They are:
- To read fluently
- To write imaginatively
- To speak confidently
- To understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken
French is assessed on a termly basis.
