Biology – Plants

Over the last few weeks we have been getting our hands dirty.  We are learning all about the growth of plants.

So far, we have discovered the functions of the main parts of a flowering plant; namely the roots, stem, leaf and flower, what requirements plants need to thrive, how a leaf makes food and how a flower makes seeds.

The children have also learned special vocabulary such as transpiration, photosynthesis and pollination and studied these processes.

We have also grown our own peas at home and are hoping they will grow well by providing them with all the requirements they need such as light, warmth air and water.  Some of us will be working through the Easter project all about plant growth too.

Here are some of our thoughts and learning.

“The green chemical in a leaf is called chlorophyll.”

“I enjoyed dissecting the lilies and finding the different parts.”

“There are different parts of a flower such as the petals, ovary, pistil, stamen and anther.”

“The pistil is the female part of the flower while the male part is called the stamen.”

“A plant needs air, nutrients, warmth, sunlight, space and water to thrive.”

“A flower entices insects like bees and butterflies which feed from the sweet nectar.”

The children have enjoyed class investigations too.  We have dissected a flower and identified and labelled the main parts.

Vocabulary

Nutrients – minerals found in water that feed the plant.

Photosynthesis: when a green plant uses the sun’s light to produce energy for itself.

Pollination: the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma to produce fertile seeds

Transpiration: the process where plants release water through tiny holes, in the leaf, called stomata

Germinate – when a seed first produces roots and shoots.

Carbon Dioxide: a gas found in the air that is poisonous to humans.

Oxygen: a gas found in the air produces by leaves
