Design and Technology - Textiles in Year 3
Date: 8th May 2026 @ 1:32pm
Over the last term, Year 3 has created some fantastic disguises and boxes in Design and Technology.
Design and Technology is the study of designing and creating a product for someone to use.
Year 3 has focussed on interfacing which is the skill of stiffening fabric to make it sturdy, strong and durable. The children used PVA glue, sugar water, paint, corn starch and hairspray to interface different materials.
Then, they created disguises and 3-D boxes from nets or shell structures. A shell structure is another name for a frame or net that creates 3-D shapes such as a cube or cuboid. A 3-D shape is made up of different 2-D shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles and circles.
The children were challenged to design and make a brilliant fabric box. The boxes are being used to store jewellery, gems, rocks, pens and some gifted theirs to other family members.
The children worked brilliantly together; helping each other with their DT skills such as cutting, joining, folding and assembling. They showed great perseverance throughout the whole process and their skills were clearly improving during each part of the design and construction process.
Here is what the children thought.
“Making the disguises and boxes was lots of fun.”
“Sticking the tabs together was really difficult.”
“I enjoyed the cutting and sticking – it was really satisfying.”
“I liked decorating because we got to choose the stickers we wanted.”
“I practised my accurate cutting.”
“I prefer using glue than tape because it was more effective.”
“The protype was hard but good practise for the final product.”
“I showed perseverance, friendship and courage.”
As Design and Technology subject leader, I am so proud that D & T continues to develop at Wardley. The children have and created some amazing products; building on the skills that they were mastering previously.
Meanwhile, have a look at all the photographs of our class to show the design process and their amazing final product.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Lots of love
