Art in Year 3
Drawing and Painting
This Autumn, Year 3 has been practising their art skills through drawing and painting.
We have studied pieces by Vincent van Gogh and Palaeolithic cave painting, both of which has inspired our drawing and painting.
Through the term, we have studied pattern, shape, line, colour and texture to produce some stunning cave paintings.
Vocabulary Alert
Drawing and Painting
Sgraffito – scratching through a paint layer
Tonking – blotting paint from a surface
Impasto – thick paint mixed with glue
The children thought:
‘I am really happy with the way my cave paintings turned out.’
‘We have to say ‘Sgraffito’ like a real Italian would.’
‘I used the other end of my brush to sgraffito my painting.’
‘I was nervous at first but when I got going my confidence grew.’
‘The value of the colours and textures look so cool.’
‘I added white to a colour so its value changed as it became lighter.’
‘I enjoyed making cave paintings – it was a good lesson.’
‘The primary and secondary colours made other colours like coral, peach, pink, beige, green, grey, brown, purple and turquoise.’
‘I loved charcoal to make an amazing cave art like in the Stone Age.’
‘We have used paint, brushes, glue, pastel and charcoal.’
There was some magic teamwork, support and encouragement and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the art experience.
Please look at our amazing photographs – quite the art gallery I am sure you would agree.
Next term, we will be creating city landscapes using different printing techniques.
Altogether, “SGRAFFITOOOOOOOOOOO!”
