Style Mill Trip

Class: Year 4 Year: 2018-2019

Year Four had an amazing time on our trip to Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, Cheshire last Friday. We visited the mill as part of our “What was important to our local Victorians?” topic. The mill was owned by a man named Samuel Greg who took young, poor children from the workhouses so that they could work in his cotton mill.

First of all, we visited the Apprentice House where we were met by Mr Shawcross. Mr Shawcross ran the Apprentice House and made sure all the children who worked at the mill followed all the living rules in the dormitories (not that they spent much time there – they were always working!)

We learnt lots about the lives of the children who worked in the mill and we were able to see where they lived and even what the type of toilets used (but the less said about that the better!)

Later, we explored the cotton mill itself. We got to see the mill machinery in action. Through this, we were able to imagine the dangers that children of the Victorian era faced when working in the mill and we all realised how lucky we really are.

Year Four were extremely well behaved and enthusiastic about their learning throughout the entire trip. What a fantastic day!
