Year 3 Big Day Out at Bolton Museum

Date: 3rd Jul 2023 @ 5:00pm

On Friday 30th June, Year 3 took a well-deserved day off school and visited Bolton Museum.  This tied in nicely with our History topic ‘How the Ancient Egyptians Lived and Died’ as well as supporting our Art and Design curriculum.

If I am completely honest, I think a few goes around the block in the coach would have made them happy but their day trip out was thoroughly embraced by all.

As we got off the coach, the children spotted a dead rat.  What an amazing start to the day, and the activities hadn’t even begun.  When we arrived, we took the opportunity to explore the main room.  Then, took part in an Art Workshop where we developed our skills and vocabulary by observing landscapes and portraits, realism, surrealism, abstract and sculptures.  The children created art themselves with fabrics and pencil crayons.  They really put their ‘art and soul’ into it.  Sorry, not sorry.

Here is what the children thought.

“The art was wonderful and I’ve never seen anything like it”

“It felt like I was looking at my own artwork”

“When I looked at the pictures I thought I was inside them”

“My favourite painting was the sunset as it made me feel warm inside”

“I liked the landscape with the Colorado river in Wyoming”

“We thought the scrap paper sculpture was great. We might do one at home”

“The gallery room was like a rainbow of colours”

We all sat in the dining room to enjoy our lunch. I was disappointed that none of the children had salt and vinegar squares so I had to make do with my own skips. I did enjoy my frazzles that evening.  Thank you, Alexis.

In the afternoon, after an exploration of the gift shop, we stepped back in time to Ancient Egypt. The exhibition was amazing.

“Some of us booed Mr Tinkler as he was sent to meet Anubis.  He cheated his way into the afterlife with a special amulet”

“I had my organs removed and they were placed in canopic jars by my so-called friends”

“I enjoyed exploring the mummification and learning about parts of the body”

“I liked dressing up as an Ancient Egyptian”

“I enjoyed the scavenger hunt when we searched for the scarab beetle, Rosetta Stone and my favourite artefact”

“I loved looking around the rest of the museum too”

Alas, the coach arrived and we bid farewell to the dead rat before climbing onto the coach.  I was hoping the children might sleep on the way back but, alas, they were in full swing, talking and laughing about their exciting day.  Their behaviour and attitude was exemplary and noted by a few members of the museum staff. As their teacher, I was extremely proud of them and I hope they all had a great time.

A special the thank you to Mrs Donovan and Mrs MacLeod for their support on the day.  I hope you enjoyed it as much as the children did.

If you are looking for a fantastic day out during the holidays then Bolton Museum is open during the week and is free to get in.

I also recommend a train journey from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street to see their museum’s amazing Ancient Egyptian exhibition among other exciting features like the planetarium.

What a great way to end this year.
