Science in Year 3

Rocks

This half term we are studying rocks.  This ties in very nicely with our History topic about The Stone Age.  We have compared the colour, pattern and texture of different rocks as well as learning some of their names and properties.

Here are some observations and knowledge that the class have shared with their friends.

We concluded the rocks are different in many ways.

  • texture (rough and smooth)
  • colour e.g. brown, red, white, grey
  • weight (heavy and light)
  • appearance (pattern, plain, crystals)
  • size and shape

‘One of the black rocks can write like a pencil’

‘I noticed some rocks were rough while others were smooth and shiny’

‘Some rocks felt like chalk. They left white dust on our fingers’

‘Rocks were different colours like silver, brown and white’

‘I noticed that some rocks were heavy and others were really light like pumice’

‘We know sandstone and limestone are used to build, marble is used for statues and slate is waterproof for roofs on houses’

‘Precious stones are diamonds, sapphire, rubies and emeralds’

Next, we will investigate rocks to test for hardness.  We will use a scratch test to do this.

Year 3 will also create a fantastic investigation to test the permeability of rocks as well as learning about the fossils and the terms ‘metamorphic’, ‘sedimentary’ and ‘igneous’.

I have included our Knowledge Organiser to help you learn about our topic.
