Science in Year 3

Rocks

This half term we are studying rocks.  This ties in very nicely with our History topic about The Stone Age.  We have compared the colour and texture of different rocks as well as learning their names and properties.

‘One of our rocks were full of crystals and sparkled like glitter.’ Blake

‘We were able to write with one of the rocks.  It was called graphite and is used to make pencils.’ Millie K

‘One of the rocks was really shiny and smooth.’ Frankie and Esme

‘Slate is flat and waterproof so you can use it for the roof on the top of your house.” Thomas

‘Pumice is really light and is full of little holes.’ Tyler

‘Our rock is really heavy.  Not all the rocks were heavy though.’ Mason

Next, we will investigate rocks to test for hardness.  We will use a scratch test to do this.

Year 3 will also create a fantastic investigation to test the permeability of rocks as well as learning about the terms ‘metamorphic’, ‘sedimentary’ and ‘igneous’.
