Modern Foreign Languages in Year 3
European Day of Languages 2025
26th September 2025
Today we celebrated the European Day of Languages. This is a wonderful introduction to our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum in Year 3.
We shared what we already knew about Europe and considered the different languages that are spoken like English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German and many more.
We looked at 4 different European countries; the UK, France, Spain and Italy and learned their capital cities and flags. We also looked at some of the delicious food like pizza, pasta and croissants that we enjoy here too.
We also leaned how to say ‘hello’ in different languages. We will practise these phrases when we do the register in school.
In France we say ‘Bonjour!’ and ‘Salut!’
In Spain we say ‘Buenos Dias’ and ‘Hola!’
In Italy we say ‘Buon Giorno’ and ‘Ciao!’
Here is what the children thought.
‘Mr T told us that pineapple does not belong on a pizza’
‘I learned that some of my favourite food comes from Italy and Spain’
‘Italy, France and Spain all have red in their flags’
‘The Italian flag is green for basil, white for mozzarella and red for tomatoes’
‘The capital of France is Paris’
‘Mozarella is made from buffalo milk’
‘Italy holds the most UNESCO world heritage sites.’
‘The famous Mona Lisa is in Paris.’
‘Bonjour and Buenos Dias mean good morning. You can also say ‘Salut!’ in French’
‘Boeuf Bourgignon is a delicious stew made in France.’
We completed the day with singing a French song called Frere Jacques. We sang in English and French. We used melody and harmony in our voices and sang in a round.
Next, we will be following the Year 3 MFL curriculum and learning lots more new words and phrases.
