The Stone Age
As historians, we have been studying The Stone Age. We have discovered the changes through the:
Palaeolithic (old or ancient stone),
Mesolithic (middle stone) and
Neolithic (new stone) Ages.
We have also looked at evidence that tells us about the changes that occurred during this very long time period.
We recently discovered that, when the ice age ended, people moved from cave shelters and hunter-gatherers to starting farming communities with permanent settlements.
Vocabulary Alert: The early Stone Age people were Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens. They were nomadic (moved from place to place) hunter gatherers. They hunted for animals such as mammoth, deer and hare and gathered fruit, vegetables and nuts.
The children thought:
“The Palaeolithic is the oldest and the Neolithic is the newest part of the Stone Age.”
“In the Mesolithic Stone Age people started to build shelters and in the Neolithic people started to farm.”
“We learned that nomads wandered all around Europe hunting and gathering.”
“Stone Age people used animal for their meat, bones, antlers and fur for clothing.”
“There was a Stone Age settlement in Scotland called Skara Brae.”
“Britain became an island in the Mesolithic Stone Age because the ice sheets melted.”
“Doggerland once linked Britain to Europe but it disappeared when the ice started to melt.”
“Woolly mammoths once roamed Britain when it was covered in ice.”
“In the Stone Age they made simple tools and weapons from stone, wood and animal bones.”
The children in Year 3 have created some amazing projects at home.
Special shout out to Aurora and her very talented auntie who made a superb working volcano. The videos and photos show the fantastic results.
The children have also used their drawing and painting skills to create some absolute masterpieces for a fantastic cave painting display.
Please watch our videos and look through our photo gallery. You are welcome to see their artwork and projects at the end of the day. They are situated in the Year 3 and 4 corridor.
Everybody after the count of 3 say ‘sgraffito’! 1….2….3….
Our next History topic will focus on The Bronze Age and Iron Age in Britain. We cannot wait to delve into the past once more.
