Geography in Year 3

Where in the world do I live?

We have kicked off this half term by using an atlas (a book of maps) to look at some features of the world.  We have located the Equator, The Tropics, the Arctic and Antarctic Circles and discovered that the world is divided into hemispheres.

We were let loose with an atlas and, with a partner, located these features by using a map of the world.

Year 3 has also be learning about the continents and oceans of the world and have used our interactive class map to locate these places.

“There are 7 continents and 5 oceans in the world.”

Frankie

“The largest continent is Asia and the largest ocean is the Pacific.”

Mason and Athena

“I live in the Northern Hemisphere.  Antarctica is a continent in the Southern Hemisphere.”

Esme C

“When we look at a map it is flat but the earth is a sphere.”

Blake

“I live the continent of Europe and 54áµ’ away from the equator.”

Esme O

Next we will be looking at Time Zones, and why they are so important, as well as identifying different physical and human features of a map by using a key.

Next week, I will be uploading a project onto Google Classroom which will support our studies and give the children a chance to research a country of their own choosing.
