Design Technology in Year 3

Shell Structures

For this term’s Design Technology (DT) the children have been challenged to design, and make, a box.  The box comes with a small Christmas gift inside, for a member of the family.

The children have worked together brilliantly; helping each other with their DT skills such as measuring, cutting, joining, scoring and assembling.

We have explored 3D shapes by assembling cubes, prisms, cuboids and tetrahedrons from nets and straws to make frames.

“When we were cutting we always held the scissors in front of us and moved the paper around.” Harmony

“I found the cutting hard at first but I kept on trying until my cuts were accurate.” Phoebe and Holly

“We had to glue the tabs before assembling the box.” Alariah

“You need to use adhesive to join our structures together.” Daniel

“The adhesives we used this week are glue and sticky tape to assemble our 3D shapes.” Skyler

“We made a prototype to show what our final product would look like.” James

Assembling had to be quick so the adhesive didn’t have time to dry.” Lennon

We cannot wait to make our final product, which will be beautifully adorned with Christmas decorations and a tasty surprise inside…Yummy!
