Art and Design in Year 3
Date: 8th Oct 2025 @ 3:39pm
Autumn Term
Drawing and Painting
This Autumn, Year 3 has been practising their art skills through drawing and painting.
We have studied pieces by Vincent van Gogh and Palaeolithic cave painting, both of which has inspired our drawing and painting.
Through the term, we have studied pattern, shape, line, colour and texture to produce some stunning cave paintings.
Vocabulary Alert
Drawing and Painting
Sgraffito – scratching through a paint layer
Tonking – blotting paint from a surface
Impasto – thick paint mixed with glue
The children thought:
‘Sgraffito is scratching paint off so you can draw.’
‘Tonking is dabbing with a paper towel to create a rough pattern.’
‘I added white to a colour so its value changed as it became lighter.’
‘I enjoyed making cave paintings – it was a good session.’
‘The primary colours (red, blue and yellow) were mixed to make other colours like peach, pink, beige, green, grey, brown, purple and turquoise.’
‘I loved charcoal and blended pastels to make an amazing cave art like in the Stone Age.’
‘We have used paint, brushes, glue, pastel and charcoal.’
There was some magic teamwork, support and encouragement and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the art experience.
Please look at our amazing photographs – quite the art gallery I am sure you would agree.
Next, we will be creating city landscapes using different printing techniques.
