  • Pancake Day - Nursery

    Published 13/03/19, by David Foster

Nursery have celebrated Pancake Day! We learnt why Pancake Day is celebrated and we made some pancakes! We put flour, eggs and milk into a bowl and whisked it up into a batter. We used a ladle to put some batter into the frying pan and waited for the pancake to cook. We were amazed at how pancakes can be flipped. We all wanted a go, we waited until the pan and a pancake was cool and all the children had a go! The children really enjoyed watching their friends doing some fantastic flipping! The children had a choice of toppings, chocolate spread was definitely the favourite! Everybody enjoyed eating the pancakes. We also made some pancake pictures and read ‘Mr Wolfs pancakes’.

Making bird food cakes in nursery

    ‘C’ is for cake!

We have been learning the ‘c’ sound in Read, Write, inc. One of our picture cards was of a cake and we were very interested in the bird food that Finlay made at home. So we decided to make some cakes for the birds -bird cakes! We mixed lard, sultanas, sunflower seeds and porridge oats together. Then we put the mixture in pots and hung the pots in our outdoor area for the birds. We are going to be doing some bird watching to see what kind of birds come into our outdoor area. We will try to name them and find out their names if we are unsure.

    Nurse Visit in Reception

Nurse Jess came into Reception today to tell us all about the role of a nurse.  She talked about how nurses help people:  by giving medication, dealing with injuries and taking care of general health and well-being.  She brought lots of things in for us to try.  We had a go at bandaging one another, listening to each other’s heartbeats, we all took our own temperatures and we also learned how to wash our hands properly.

    Police Visit to Reception

PC Alex and PC Karl came in to visit us in Reception.  They told us all about how the police help us every day and cleared up Receptions idea that they “just put bad guys in jail!”  They told us how they keep people safe and help people who are in trouble.  They also shared with us what we could do if we ever needed their help.  They showed us all their equipment that they needed to do their job properly and let us climb into the back of the police van.  They put the flashing lights on and let some of us have a go at pressing their siren.  Finally, PC Alex and PC Karl let us all dress up as Police Officers – using coats, helmets, caps, body armour and shields.  We had a brilliant afternoon.

    Published 07/02/19, by David Foster

    ‘P’ for Pizza!

We have been learning the sound ‘p’ in our Read, Write, Inc sessions. We talked about some things that begin with this sound. We thought of pizza…we learned that we all love it in nursery! We decided to make our very own pizzas at school. We were very excited by this and we had lots of fun making them.  We had to use a knife very carefully to spread tomato puree on our base and then we had to sprinkle on some cheese and wait for the pizza to cook in the oven. Our favourite part was eating them! Amelia. D said the pizza was “Delicious”. Dominic said it was “De-lummy”. Koral said the pizza tasted “Good”.

    Firefighters Visit

Firefighters from Agecroft Firestation came in to visit Reception as part of our topic – ‘People Who Help Us’.  They talked to us about what a firefighter does, the different ways that they help people and animals and how they rescue people and save lives.  We went outside and looked at all the equipment on the fire-engine and they explained to us what it is used for.  Then, they let us all have a go at using one of the hoses and we even got to sit in the fire-engine and try on the firefighters helmets.  They turned on the blue lights and the sirens, which were very loud, and explained to us why they use them in an emergency.

  • Magic in Nursery

    Magic in Nursery!

Throughout November, children in nursery have been showing an interest in magic! We have followed their interests by creating a ‘potions lab’, dressing up in magic capes and making our very own magic wands. We have also read magical books such as ‘Meg and Mog’ and ‘Winnie the witch’. The wands were a great stimulus for role-play, we have learned lots of spells. Following our RWI sessions the children have even used our wands to write sounds in the air!

    Harvest celebration

As part of our Harvest celebrations, we have read the book, ‘Oliver’s vegetables’. We have talked about how Harvest is celebrated and we have investigated how fruit and vegetables are harvested. The children have been using potato peelers to peel vegetables this week. We were very careful and did some excellent peeling! On Friday we made some delicious vegetable soup. We really enjoyed it, the children shared their thoughts on the soup... “It was delicious”, said Molly. “It’s orange!” exclaimed Kayal. “It’s nice” said Megan.

    Maths in Reception

In Reception we are having lots of fun exploring number.  We are counting things which cannot be moved, by touch counting and we are using ‘move and count’ to count different groups of objects.  We are counting things from larger groups and selecting the correct numerals to represent these sets of objects. We are also recognising numbers to 20 and beyond. In addition to this, we are ‘having a go’ at recording these larger numbers.

  • Welcome to Nursery

    Nursery News

We have been extremely busy in Nursery! We have all settled into school-life really well. We have shared our ‘All About Me’ books and found out about each other. The children were able to talk about themselves in front of the whole class! We really enjoyed looking at the photographs and drawings in the books.  We have begun our phonics sessions and we have been thinking about ‘how do we do good listening?’ In small groups we went on ‘listening walks’ and listened carefully for all the sounds we could hear around school, (we could hear some mysterious whistling!).
